Robbie McEwen signs on as Event Ambassador

McEwen participated in the Tour de France 12 times in 1997 (117th), 1998 (89th), 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2010.  He has had 12 stage wins.  In 1999 on Stage 20, he won the sprint in Paris on the Champs-Elysées.

In welcoming Robbie to the races, CIC Events would like to unveil two key initiatives the former professional road bicycle racer will be championing in his role as Event Ambassador: the Robbie McEwen VIP Riders' BBQ and JOIN the RIDE with Robbie.

Registered riders who nominate their friends and family to race in the Gran Fondo World Series Perth Qualifying events will be invited to the exclusive Robbie McEwen VIP Riders' BBQ, taking place after the Gran Fondo on 13 March 2016.  Riders will have the opportunity to relax and recover, with generous servings of both delicious BBQ favourites and post-race anecdotes on offer throughout the afternoon.

And for those who wish to race the course at their own pace and circumvent the commitment of competitive racing, JOIN the RIDE with Robbie presents such interested parties with the opportunity to do exactly that.  As an Event Ambassador promoting Cycling for All, Robbie can't wait to welcome casual riders and lead them as some of the first cyclists to ever ride through the newly redeveloped Elizabeth Quay.

More information about these initiatives is available here:

In addition to Robbie McEwen, the competition has also attracted acclaimed former Australian Olympic riders Stephen Fairless and Patrick Jonker.  After representing his country in road cycling at the Seoul Olympics in 1988, Fairless retired from the sport shortly after, only to then make a victorious comeback and claim the UCI World Championship title in 2015.  As he gears up to defend his title, Jonker rallies the charge for battle; with the triumph of winning his first World Championship and coveted Rainbow bands in his sights.
